Cannon. The book deals with a part of modern physiologic research in which progress made during the past sixteen years is conspicuous. In Otto Loewi reported his classic experiments, in which he showed for the frog's heart that stimulation of autonomic nerve fibers leads to liberation of definite chemical substances which influence the effector organs.

A neuroeffector junction is a site where a motor neuron releases a neurotransmitter to affect a target—non-neuronal—cell. This junction functions like a synapse. However, unlike most neurons, somatic efferent motor neurons innervate skeletal muscle, and are always excitatory.

Visceral efferent neurons innervate smooth muscle, cardiac muscle. Development of the Autonomic Nervous System guided by factors elaborated in the intervening environment [1, 2]. Thus, in both systems the target is not required to direct this nerve growth, because axons take the correct path to the periphery despite target ablation.
